Sierra Nevada Photos: Mulhacén, Veleta & Pradollano
With an area of 86,000 hectares and a length of 100 kilometers, the Sierra Nevada (‘Snowy Mountains’) is the largest natural area in Spain. The Sierra Nevada is home to 800 plant species and 30 percent of the native Spanish plant species. It is protected as a biosphere reserve and national park. Its highest peaks are Mulhacén (3,479 m) and Veleta (3,394 m) – visible in the photos below.

The Sierra Nevada is one of the southernmost places in Europe where snow remains visible for much of the year. Despite the heat in the nearby city of Granada during summer, snow can occasionally still be found on the highest peaks.
The mountainous region is also home to one of southern Europe’s most famous ski resorts, Solynieve. Several ski slopes and winter sports facilities can be found in the area surrounding the village of Pradollano.

Granada: at the foot of the Sierra
At the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains lies Granada – at an altitude of 738 meters above sea level. If you want to visit the Sierra Nevada, the city is the logical choice for having a cup of coffee or visiting the Alhambra.
